Project rocket video

The other day after I made the brainstorm my family and I went on a walk to a park and attempted to launch the baking soda and vinegar rocket. We brought all the materials to the park and set everything up. The rocket launched about half a metre into the air. We figured out why it didn't launch higher, it was because the cork wasn't long enough so it didn't build enough pressure for it to go higher. Next time I will get a longer cork.

Here is a video of the rocket launching:

Four forces diagram

In Blastoff we are learning about flight. We had to make a diagram of the four forces of flight. we had to label where the thrust, drag, lift and gravity is on an aeroplane. I put arrows to show where they are indicated.

Project rocket Brain storm

In the past week in my Blast off class, we have been learning about rockets. For our project rocket, we have to make a model of a rocket that will actually fly, but there's a catch, we have to make the rocket so it can be built by year 3 students. We also have to teach the students a lesson on forces, we have to make it easy for them to understand, so no big words that they might not know.

Here is a brainstorm on an idea that could work:

Rubric / End of term reflection

This term my modules were Blast off and Amazing adaptations. In Blast off I have enjoyed working with my buddy and building catapults and rube goldberg machines. The rube gold berg machines were really hard to make because the dominos that we used were too small so we had to change them to jengas. In amazing adaptations we were writing reports on amazing animals. My report is about the fennec fox and I have finished it but I just need to add some things to make it sound really good. In literacy we are watching movies and doing little tasks that go with the movie, the movie that my group is watching is: Horton hears a who. In Numeracy we are doing algebra and simplifying equations, its a little bit hard and I needed help with simplifying algebra equations but otherwise I think i'm doing ok in numeracy. In Te Whare we are learning about saints that went on journeys like Moses, Abraham and Sarah, Saint Paul and Jesus.

This year the yr7s and yr8s are going on a ski trip. I am going to try and pack my own bag without my Mum helping me. I am really looking forward to skiing in the cold, icy snow.

Catapults poster

This week for blast off we did a competition for our catapults. My group got 3rd place for our catapult going further than the others. We had to design a catapult that went far and it was a strong structure. Then we had to design a poster with information on selling the catapult.

Rube goldberg machine.

In the past few weeks in blast off we have been making Rube goldberg machines. Rube goldberg machines are complex machines doing simple tasks, these tasks could be: putting a ball in a bucket, put a bottle in a bin, ring a bell, switch off a light or some other tasks. Our task was to get a ball in a cup, we used: jenga, tennis ball, glue stick, car, tracks, marble, roll of tape, domino lid and dominos. Together we made this machine:

And here is our final design:

Catapults

This week in blast off we built catapults. We had to follow some instructions on how you build them. We made three models, One that is small, one with a triangle base and one with a square base. We had to indentify the energys that catapults hold, when it is launching it has elastic and potencial energy, when it is in the air it has kinetic energy.

Here are some slides on our recorded data and the instructions so you can build them too:

How to be Cybersafe

Today in wellbeing class the yr 7s and yr 8s went to the gym and we had Sam the policeman come and talk to us about cyber safety. Here are three things we learnt about being safe online.

1. Don't click on any links that are too good to be true, this result in you losing money from your bank account or having hackers access your account.

2. Don't post personal information, people can access this and then send messages to you and make you think that it's someone different.

3. If you want to post pictures of other people, ask for their permission first

Are there any other ways to be cybersafe?

Fashion Inquiry

Last Trimester we had to make a inquiry on our fashion decade. We used slides and we had to explain things from our decade like what fashions, colours, prints etc were popular, some information on what magor things occurred like world war ll.

My water foot print

Today with our peer support buddies we calculated our water footprint. We had to do a quiz and that told us how much water you use a day. Here is a link to the site if you want to find out your water footprint  https://www.watercalculator.org/ We also found out ways to reduce water, here are some ways you can reduce water:

Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth

Have shorter showers

collect water in the summer

Here is a screen shot of the page so you can see how much water my family uses a day

Can you think of anymore ways to reduce water?

Design Portfolio

This trimester in my Cafe class we had to put all of our work onto one slide show. Our slides have to include: personal logo, Business card, colour pallette with 3-5 colours, menu with food and prices, our logo on a tee shirt and coffee cup and a poster to promote the opening of our new cafe. I made two business cards, one is my personal business card and the other my cafe business card.

If you had a cafe what would it look like?

Which One Doesn't Belong - Summer Learning Journey Day 1

Today I did an activity from the Summer Learning Journey, I did one called Which one doesn't belong. I had to watch some videos and then go onto a slide with different photos and say which ones I thought didn't belong. But I had to tell 2 or 3 answers why each one didn't belong. At the end I did my own on doughnuts.

Here is the slide:

What Christmas Means to me

Last week we had to write what christmas means to us so Mrs Naden could send them to the news paper because they wanted to find out what kids thought of christmas. I think that the actual joy of christmas comes from giving rather than getting.

here is what I wrote:

What christmas means to me…

Christmas is a happy time,

To share with family and friends.

It's a time for love, joy and giving a gift,

And maybe getting one too.

It is a time to celebrate, have fun and enjoy,

So Merry Christmas!

Goal setting update

Today we did a goal setting update on the goal setting sheet that we started in term one. I achieved some of my goals but I have to work on some things for next year. I liked seeing what my goals were at the start of the year and if I achieved them or not.

here is my goal sheet:

Ice candles

Yesterday we made ice candles! It was really interesting and it was really awesome when we pulled the carton off the wax and all the water poured out. Here are some steps and equipment to make ice candles yourself:

Equipment:

Old candles

Long candles

milk cartons ( the cardboard ones that you get soy milk in )

ice

Frying pan

Steps:

1. cut open the top of the milk carton

2. pour some olive oil inside the carton and spread it around in the inside, make sure you have covered all the sides

3. turn on the stove and put the old candles in the pan, melt them until it is just liquid

4. get your long candles and put one in each milk carton, make sure they are in the middle

5. fill the milk cartons up to the top with ice

6. get your melted candles ( if they are done ) and pour the wax into the carton

let the candles sit over night and rip the carton off them in the morning

here are some photos of us making ice candles:

November Reflection

Today we were doing our November reflection. We had to write a problem from this month, write about the Maori culture festival and lots of other stuff. I like to do these reflections because I like to remember and reflect on my learning from this month. I enjoyed writing about the Maori culture festival, I found it tricky to think of a problem to write, next time I would do a lighter background.

Here is my reflection:

Moon Masque

Today for Cybersmart we were doing art colouring book. We had to watch some videos about art and then go onto art colouring book and chose a picture to colour in. The picture i chose was called Moon Masque and its by Lois Mailou Jones who is a famous artist and taught other people in watercolour classes. She liked to paint landscapes and street scenes.

I enjoyed colouring in the art,

I found it tricky to chose colours that go together well,

Next time I could make it a bit more colourful,

                                                                       Here is my art:

And here is Lois Mailou Jones's art:

Rat Island Language Features Worksheet

Today for our reading tasks we had to do a language features sheet. We had to find Similes, Metaphors and Personification in the book, then we had to say what our visualisations were e.g what we see, hear, taste, smell, our touch. I did three similes but I couldn't find any Personification or Metaphors.

I enjoyed reading through the book and finding the Similes, Metaphors and Personification,

I found it tricky to find the Similes,

Next time i could put more Similes, Metaphors and Personification.

Here is a photo of my worksheet:

Rat island predictions

This week for reading we are starting a new book called Rat Island by Stu Duval. We had to look and the front cover and read the blurb at the back, then we had to complete the pre-reading prediction sheet and write down what we think the book is going to be about. After we did the prediction we had to read chapter 1 of the book.
I enjoyed reading chapter 1,
I found it tricky to

Here is a picture of my prediction sheet:

If you can't read it this is what I think the book is going to be about:
I think that there is an island and there are lots of rats, they take over the island and if the pirates don't obey the rules on the ship they have to go and live on rat island with all the rats.

Camp Thank you letters

Last week we went on camp and this week we had to write a letter to one of the helpers or teachers who came on camp. I chose Shaun who was the parent helper for my group. At camp we did heaps of fun activities like high ropes, flying fox, laser tag, rock climbing and frisbee golf. My favorite was the flying fox and going on the luge. Camp is definitley one of my favorite memories from 2020.

I enjoyed writing the letter,

I found it tricky to think of what to write,

Next time I would add another photo,

Here is my letter:

Dear Shaun,

{I am writing to you to thank you for being one of the amazing parent helpers who helped make the Year 5 and 6 camp possible. Thank you for helping with the activities like the high ropes course and the flying fox. Without your help we wouldn’t have been able to do those activities. You also helped other people have more fun by āencouraging them to go one step further.

Two of my favourite activities were the flying fox and slingshot paintball. Corin got me in the back, Unasie hit me in the face and I got paint in my mouth. It was also funny when you zoomed past me on the luge! Thanks for encouraging me to climb higher on the rock wall and reach my goal.

So thank you for giving up your time to come on camp and help out.

{I really appreciate it. I hope you had a great time too.

Ngā mihi
